"Time didn't stand still... it flew...backwards."
He kept thinking that if enough time passed it wouldn't hurt so bad when he saw her.
But like some very wise, very old man once said, "The longer you are away from the flame, The more it burns when you return..."
She kept thinking that if enough time passed it wouldn't hurt so bad when she saw him. |

It was “now” way back when
But now it’s just “then”.
And they both sit there in “now”
Longing for “then”… again
My Grandmaw used to say, "Now, then". I think I know what she meant. |

She at times still comes around, but she's someone else's now, I can't lay it down, no matter how I try... |

As I stepped off the train I saw the old depot and beyond it the dusty street that led to the saloon where so many years had been spent practicing my, um, craft. Funny how different it looked with clear eyes in the light of day.
The pretty redhead was holding the young girl that had gotten off behind me. I noticed her eyes thru the tears and how they still changed colors with the light. She had been here in the whiskey years but something [besides Carmelita] had kept me from ever approaching her. I never knew if it was the pain or the intelligence in her face, but every time I started to talk to her it just came out as mumbles. She said, I heard you gave up the whiskey and the preaching, so what do you do now? I said, I try to make things right. She said, It's a big world, why here? I looked at her face and her eyes, still changing, but slowly now, and said, Gotta start somewhere, and besides, It kinda feels like home.

As we walked down the dirt street together, we passed the Cafe San Lupo. I said, Are you still working there? Betty said, No, I give piano lessons now. As her girl tagged behind, I whispered, Does she know about the dance-hall-girl days? She said, I was a widow, left out here alone and I wasn't going to make a living laying down.... I did it with who I wanted, when I wanted and not for money. I said, Who's that supposed to make feel better, me or you? It was quiet for a spell after that....

We sat on her back porch drinking coffee waiting for the twilight and the grass to grow thru the dust.
She said, You know, we made love once, all those years ago.
I said, You'd think I'd remember a thing like that.
She said, You were laying in your room, barely conscious, mumbling about making love to a green bottle. I crept in wearing nothing but Carmelita's vanilla and never said a word.
I said, Jesus, What else did you keep to yourself?
She whispered, a sound like a butterfly sighing,
Have you looked at my girls eyes?

Some memories are buried beneath other memories. Some mistakes are made without ever knowing they were made. Wisps of smoke and shadows of dreams are all we're left of the past and the future rolls around every second.
She turned over to face me and asked what I was thinking about.
I said, Now, darlin, only now.

It had been years but nothing had changed. Same old town. Same peeling paint on the buildings. Same old men sitting under the tree...same tree; right in the middle of main street. Same saloon. Some of the girls were even the same...a few new ones...young; too young. They didn't have that dead look in their eyes yet...the one that comes after they realized that "he" was never gonna come take 'em away.
Same tables and chairs. Same bartender. "Ain't seen you around in a while...hell, it's been years ain't it? Where you been?...... ....Don't have much to say, do ya? Why, we haven't seen you since...."
"Leave the bottle". |

Stuffed shells baking in the oven, house smelling of garlic bread and vanilla candles.
Ladybugs making love on the back porch. Betty named them Rufus and Nadine and we watched them for an hour listening to A Love Supreme playing out the window in the Hudson Valley summer afternoon.
They would go at it like mad for a little while, then rest, then go at it like mad, then rest. Finally after we thought they might be stuck together, he circled her body three times, and they both flew away.
We hadn't needed the inspiration, But, I passed a lifetime looking at her legs and watching her eyes dance, watching them.

"In this sacred place We call The Board What is passed Hand to hand here Lifts us So Order a ritual Incense in cones Thicken the Autumn air with it Sandalwood, cinnamon, clove Brew tea in a dragon-shaped pot Drink it Light five ivory candles Pray for grace Place a teaspoonful of sunshine Under your tongue Feast after fasting so long Keep your pantry shelves spilling Whatever you need For this journey"

One of Mickey's greatest regrets was not having the strength to publish Rosin. |
