TONIGHT THE STARS ARE CLOSER
A farm house near a ballpark Light comes through the trees The sound of horses in the dark The summer on its knees Amber glow of a cigarette His porch a lonely boat That song that he is writing yet A lozenge in his throat
A motor home out by the shed Hubcaps raw with rust Highways running through his head The memories we trust Scars along the neck and frets The chords he loves to play Remembering what the world forgets The year, the month, the day
Tonight the stars are closer They shine upon his brow There's a radio in outer space I'm listening to it now
A long way south to Texas Forever's farther still The earth grinds on her axis He wonders if she will Turn one day without his soul His suffering done at last And the piper come to pay the toll And will the music last?
The ballpark now in shadow The lights have been turned off The horses in the meadow The lozenge and the cough I listen as he drops the D I hear him clear his throat His porch is drifting out to sea The moon unties his boat
Tonight the stars are closer They shine upon his brow There's a radio in outer space I'm listening to it now I'm listening to it now
