Message:  At approximately 7:00 pm, Saturday(local time) Chad and his platoon were engaged in a fire fight in or around Baghdad. An RPG( Rocket Propelled Grenade) exploded approximately 10 feet from my son. A piece of shrapnel about the size of a 38 calibre bullet lodged in Chad's right arm. During the next two hours he continued to lead his platoon. The fire fight was sucessful and the enemy was laid waste. The doctors said that to retrieve the fragment would result in completely destroying his arm. They say he will carry it for the rest of his life. Chad's forearm is about twice normal size and he is unable to use his hand. Hopefully, this will not be the case when the swelling subsides. Chad is in good spirits and full of pain killer.
My son is a good man and he has more GRIT than anyone I know. He is not only my son, but my hero. I know that he will want to return to his platoon as soon as possible. He is suppose to call me tomorrow and I will politely ask his to get out of that HELL HOLE if at all possible. He has come close to death on two occasions and I am concerned about a possible #3. I know that he will get the Purple Heart, but that has little significance to me. Like LL said,"Tonight I just want to hold my little boy". Funny ,you're right. When I thought of Chad today, my mental picture of him was as a little boy not my grown up soldier/son. I have a great deal for which to be thankful. Obviously, Chad not being more seriously hurt or dead and all of you. Thanks so much for the well wishes and prayers. You mean more to me than I can express. GOD bless each and every one.
