Subject:  Gustav's Gone
Message:  Well folks, I've gotta admit.....ol Gussie had a little more spunk than I gave 'im credit for. For a cat2 storm; the damage around here is right up there with the big boys. He also took a number of lives here in LA. Personally; I was quite lucky....the winds were in the area of 70-100 with a few really nasty gusts that were easily about 120. At my house; the tops of 2 trees broke off and are in my back yard.......big poppas about 30 feet long and quite heavy. It also tore up a metal shed of mine and ripped some shingles off the roof as well as broke a buncha smaller branches. I also lost most of the food in my refrigerator & freezer. My in-laws lost a large quanset hut type shelter that was blown in and tore up an RV parked inside. My sister's house has a large pecan tree that fell across the road into her front yard. A tree fell on a guy's house in Lafayette killing a 27 yr.old man. My supervisor lost her cat in Mississippi when she stopped to eat while evacuating and the cat got spooked and ran off into the woods beyond the McDonald's. Her boss' chimney was ripped off her house and thrown in pieces on their roof. Everyone had some damage done. But all in all though; as a community; we were probably pretty lucky. The worst for me was the time without power or running water....from 1pm Monday till Thursday nite at about 6:45.   We do get spoiled for those little luxuries in life, don't we? Must admit it's been a miserable few days though...fighting mosquitoes, heat, no showers, running water or working bathroom fixtures, and the humidity. Ya also get tired of foods ya can't cook as your diet, because ya can't use a stove or microwave. All the floors in the house were totally covered with a sheen of liquid it was so humid. The storm actually started for us about 9am Monday and went on till about midnight before it was all past......we thought. Tuesday was ok for a couple hours then it seemed to start all over again with wind gusts in the 40-50mph range. What I didn't know at the time; was we were under tornado warnings most of the day. In fact one touched down about a mile from my house....that's why the gusts were kinda strong around here I guess. I've been through many hurricanes; some stronger and more deadly, but this one has sure been an aggravation and it hung around a lot longer than most. Usually; there's a few hours for the approach.....the eye.....then the backside another few hours. All together maybe 6 or 7 hours. This one just wouldn't go away. That had something to do with the wait for electricity....can't work on power lines in that kinda weather. While the storm was kickin' around here; I shot 2 videos.....kinda short...you can check it out on the front page of my MYSpace page. The address is www.myspace.com/koalacom8.
Glad to be back in the real world....the hot shower and AC has done wonders for me.....also; I can cook stuff now!!:):)....although I don't like to cook.:)

take care all......and THANKS for all the prayers and good wishes for us all.

Kenny
