| Message: | About JIMMY WEBB´s, tune "Wichita Lineman", #no.1. most air tune on US country radio station in the last century! THE STORY! Wichita Lineman, Glen Campbell, 1968 Mister Webb told the story some weeks ago in AUSTRALIA: First of all, do you know that telephone linemen do not work for the county in Kansas? A fan told me after a show one night. I looked at him tenderly and said, "It's just a f---ing song!". So anyway, up in the Kansas - Oklahoma panhandle where I was a junior in high school, it's beautiful, very flat country. I was driving along one day going up to see my brother and there are all these telephone poles going off into the distance. I saw a man up on a telephone pole and as I got closer I saw that he was talking into a portable phone. It might not sound like much but he was the only living thing I'd seen for an hour-and-a-half. I started thinking about who he was and what his life might be like. Later Glen Campbell called me - this was after "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" was a hit - and he said, "We need a Jimmy Webb song and to be honest we need it to be about a locale. Could you do something?". It's the only time I ever sat down and purpose-wrote a song. I got most of it done in around three hours. They needed it quickly, so I called the studio and said, "I'm going to send over this song and I don't really think it's finished but let me know if you like it and then I'll fill in the missing bits." Two or three days later Glen called and said, "I wanna thank you for that song. I think that's a hit." I said, "What do you mean? That tape I sent you?" He said, "Yeah, Wichita Lineman." I said, "That wasn't done." And he said, "It is now." They went ahead and cut it and he put guitar in the bit that I didn't have words for. Every time I hear the song I just hear the part where I didn't write any words. JIMMY WEBB and great sing-, songwriter, PAUL WILLIAMS (group Carpenter writer) together in Australia in April 2008. Mister Paul is film-music AWARD winner with Barbra Streisand with tune "Evergreen" from film "A star is born" with her and Kris Kristofferson. And both this TWO artist have also recorded J.W. tunes.
