| Message: | When I first moved to Gnashville, a writer being able to maintain ANY of the publishing share was very rare. When a publisher has clout and is doing it's job, ie. actively pitching and achieving substantial cuts, giving up the publishing share is a fair deal in my opinion. Especially if you are unknown and trying to get a foot in the door. As Douglas accurately points out, 25% of something is better than 100% of nothing. The advent of writers maintaining all or portions of their publishing is really a by product of the prevalence of singer/songwriter's. If you are profitably recording and marketing your own material, the need for a "publisher" diminishes. All in all, I think your writer friend should seriously rethink his stance, Dorothy. Getting someone to work his songs without gaining a piece of the "pie" is pretty unrealistic. Especially if he has no connections of his own. |
