| Message: | Hello, Barbara. I knew Mick for 25 years. I met him like everybody else. Through his music. I heard his songs and they haunted me '76 and '77. What IS he that he can sound like that? I wondered. So I wrote him a letter. Of course I never expected to hear from him. Several months passed. One day at work the phone rang. "...Ro-sheeeen?..." he said in his voice. "Well... Mr. Newbury. It's about time!" I said. We were friends from then on. He's the sum of everything wonderful said about him. And so much more. Uncannily intuitive. A quirky genius full of mischief. An original brilliance....like a flash from a lighthouse window. Serious and funny. Playful. A devoted friend. Over the years he walked me across the hard bridges. "Take your sunglasses off, Ro," he said, and gave me his prescription glasses. We both wore corrective lenses. "You can see perfectly clear now, can't you?" he said. And I could. He'd call and ask, "...Are you wearing my glasses?" Every day, Mick. Every night. He would love your poetry. PS I hope somebody tells you about the crickets. And the golf with Willie. |
