As my fingers gripped the slippery rocks
that made up the wall of the dank, dark
well I found myself in, I heard a voice
and looked up at a beautiful face
looking down at me.

If I throw you a rope, she said,
maybe I can save you.

That's okay. I'm fine,
I said,
I'm just getting good at this.

What we've done, and where we've been...eventually leads us to what we do, and where we are.

Life's a journey, not a destination.

It's midnight. She's at the bar wearing sunglasses. She asks him for a light in French. Asks him if he is American. "Yes, Ma'am," he says, thumbing a flared match to her cigarette. Later, he says, "How often do you run into someone who changes your life?" The riotous flowers Mardi Gras faces. The hot wind licking the plates. Down the sand-blown road a furious sunshine. At the edge of the continent it's all about water...and the tide rising under your bed.

He digs the next hole
He hits the bottom once more
He climbs out again

Looking for a hand
He never seems to find it
He still struggles out

Bouncing back again
He fears that next time he'll break
The holes are still there

IS IT ONLY ME?

Why does evrybody seem afraid
of doing something wrong?
There isn't any hurry
But I can only wait so long.
Her eyes alone can take me
to the edges of the sky
Her lips can leave me speechless
and make me wonder why....

Is it only me in love this time
or do I have a chance
To make up for all the years
I'd forgotten how to dance?
Been around the world and back
To the sun, the stars, the moon
Is this the one that's special
Did my heart give up too soon?

Why does love seem sometimes to
come in like a breeze
Such a little girl to
bring an old man to his knees
Evrywhere is nowhere
If I cannot see her face
Redemption's just a word tonight
Inside this empty space

Ask me too many questions
I'll fill you full of lies
Any thought I start to have
Begins inside those eyes
That thought alone can take me
to the edges of the sky
Her lips can leave me speechless
and make me wonder why....

Is it only me in love this time
or do I have a chance
To make up for all the years
I'd forgotten how to dance
Been around the world and back
To the sun, the stars, the moon
Is this the one that's special
Did my heart give in too soon?

She was a long lost reminder
of the man I could've been
The doors I should've walked on by
The ones that drew me in
Everyday another mile
Further from that dream
Reminding me that flesh & blood
Are not all that they seem

She stumbled in late that night
When I'd given up the chase
I'd put oceans of whiskey down
But had one more for the taste
They all look like angels
When it's quarter after three
Her eyes were used to darkness
A warm body filled the need

It's a tunnel running nowhere
I love the life I lead
It's me that flies and me that cries
While those around me bleed
Evrytime she made that sound
I touched her deep inside
The water's getting colder
The river seems so wide.

She was a long lost reminder
of the man I could've been
The doors I should've walked on by
The ones that drew me in
Everyday another mile
Further from that dream
Reminding me that flesh & blood
Are not all that they seem

The Twain thing. Man In White is a book length rebuttal to biographers who have presented the humorist's waning days as ones of unrelieved bitterness and pain. (Pure nonsense.) Twain's moods changed frequently. It's unrealistic to saddle him with one dominant emotion during his final years, when he was as likely to assume the part of joker as well as that of the angry prophet. Not so for Laura Trombley's sour Mark Twain's Other Woman.
~

Historical note: Clara Clemens, Twain's oldest daughter who died in 1962, spent her final years at the Bahia Hotel on Mission Bay in San Diego.

There are ghosts behind the house tonight
They're partying in the woods
She warned me not to leave her
[As if I ever could]
Strangers shout my name in the street
They're knocking at my door
She thinks she's gonna find me
Passed out on the floor.

Too many voices talking in my head
Too many wanting to be heard
If she'd sing me the melody
I know I could find the words

They're dancing in the moonlight
keeping me awake
Is she an angel or a devil
Is a feeling I can't shake
Gods and Generals call me
all trying to spread the Word
I used to be an eagle
Now I'm just a tiny bird

Too many voices talking in my head
Too many wanting to be heard
If she'd sing me the melody
I know I could find the words

I stumble thru the rocks and leaves
to where I saw the light
It;s gotten so quiet now
they left without a fight
The ones I've loved, the ones I've lost
Come back again in songs
There's so much in life that's good
It's just taking so damn long

Too many voices talking in my head
Too many wanting to be heard
If she'd sing me the melody
I know I could find the words

If she'd just sing me the melody
I could find the words.

"I used to be an Eagle, now, I'm just a tiny bird."

Love that line, Hank. And, this one, too.

"It's a tunnel running nowhere"

You write some pretty awesome stuff ... stuff I love to read.
You write with everything in you .... comes from all that you are
and have been. Right?

Love,
BarbraG

In her voice a dog is barking,
Just outside my soul.
She never saw the best of me
She never saw me whole.
Ornaments for earrings,
Rainbow tattoos on her skin.
Some days her hair was blonde
Turned red the nights she sinned.

There never was the time then
The way I've got it now.
Forever's never long enough
Always learning how.
The times I knew and the times I cared
They don't matter anymore
Tonite that dog is barking
Time to close up that back door.

Ornaments for earrings,
Rainbow tattoos on her skin
Some days her hair was blonde
Turned red the nites she sinned.

One day or nite can change things
The leaves blow down the street
A woman laughs, a baby cries
Did I teach her how to cheat?
Somebody else's life
Is playing in my head
No direction left but up,
More alive than dead

Years they pass, scars they show
Redemption draweth nigh
If it wasn't for the moonlight
No one would see us cry
Love comes to town once or twice
Sometimes it even stays
Like the circus, roll the tents
The clown's the one who pays.

Ornaments for earrings,
Rainbow tattoos on her skin
Some days her hair was blonde
Turned red the nites she sinned

Ornaments for earrings,
Rainbow tattoos on her skin.

"...centuries of memories..." he says of that craggy coastline. She's leaning over the railing, seasick. The story is curved. Elliptical love. Shipwrecks and disasters. History and alibis. Bouyed by the bells on her water-logged shoes, adrift on his strange ocean.

In the city of Frankincensco the street lamps were always shrouded in fog.
