"I used to be an Eagle, now, I'm just a tiny bird."

Love that line, Hank. And, this one, too.

"It's a tunnel running nowhere"

You write some pretty awesome stuff ... stuff I love to read.
You write with everything in you .... comes from all that you are
and have been. Right?

Love,
BarbraG

In her voice a dog is barking,
Just outside my soul.
She never saw the best of me
She never saw me whole.
Ornaments for earrings,
Rainbow tattoos on her skin.
Some days her hair was blonde
Turned red the nights she sinned.

There never was the time then
The way I've got it now.
Forever's never long enough
Always learning how.
The times I knew and the times I cared
They don't matter anymore
Tonite that dog is barking
Time to close up that back door.

Ornaments for earrings,
Rainbow tattoos on her skin
Some days her hair was blonde
Turned red the nites she sinned.

One day or nite can change things
The leaves blow down the street
A woman laughs, a baby cries
Did I teach her how to cheat?
Somebody else's life
Is playing in my head
No direction left but up,
More alive than dead

Years they pass, scars they show
Redemption draweth nigh
If it wasn't for the moonlight
No one would see us cry
Love comes to town once or twice
Sometimes it even stays
Like the circus, roll the tents
The clown's the one who pays.

Ornaments for earrings,
Rainbow tattoos on her skin
Some days her hair was blonde
Turned red the nites she sinned

Ornaments for earrings,
Rainbow tattoos on her skin.

"...centuries of memories..." he says of that craggy coastline. She's leaning over the railing, seasick. The story is curved. Elliptical love. Shipwrecks and disasters. History and alibis. Bouyed by the bells on her water-logged shoes, adrift on his strange ocean.

In the city of Frankincensco the street lamps were always shrouded in fog.

Where they sail to and where they arrive at are...not the same destination. "...just a little leap of Faith..." he says, treading water, pressing his mouth of invention to her ruby-stung ear. Later, he says, "I like to be surprised. How 'bout you?"

"When did you get your last tetanus shot?" she asks him when they reach the San Ysidro gate. Border Patrol kicking the tires. The dogs sniffing around. Barking up a racket. Holy chicken wire and papier mache cargo. Chipped-mirror wings. Pierced-tin haloes. Sharp-edged Easter Angels demanding a finger. Sometimes a thumb.

Contagious candles. A litany of tides to enchant them. The usual palms and blue sky. All that falling-down Shangri La light where they live on the fault line leaning on Fate. "Bits and pieces of dreams scraping our cheeks," he says.

Divine intervention
pried the lips of the shell
She had a body from Heaven
A swagger from Hell
He never saw her coming
Pirate smile on her lips
You have one and like it
It's that easy to slip.

Sometimes in neon
he could see clear as day
The ferryman rides you
but you don't want to pay
Eyes closed you don't see it,
the bottle, the lips
You have one and like it
It's that easy to slip

The perfume is smelled
when you take off the top
Her skin, the white powders
Too good to stop.
Pleasure keeps rolling
Like a train thru his hips
You have one and like it
It's so easy to slip

So Easy
To
Slip

GIVIN UP ON GIVIN UP

They say no one likes a quitter
And a quitter never wins,
There's things I'm long past quitting
That keep me where I've been

I'm riding round in circles
Lord, I never see a smile
I passed this place a week ago
Yeah, It's the same old dusty mile

But
I'm givin up on givin up
I know it's going to take some doin
But it's time I leave this highway
This road is bound to lead to ruin
I'm givin up on givin up
God, I just can't take the pace
When you're in a pack headin downhill
You don't want to lead the race

I've seen my share of sunshine
But mostly it's been rain
I never see the top of the hill
It's the same tired downbound train

Lord, I'm askin for one time to try
Just One chance to get it right
We've both been down this road before
This time let me share your light

I'm givin up on givin up
I know it's going to take some doin
But it's time I leave this highway
This road is bound to lead to ruin
I'm givin up on givin up
God, I just can't take the pace
When you're in a pack headin downhill
You don't want to lead the race

I'm givin up on givin up
God, I just can't take the pace
When you're in a pack headin downhill
You don't want to lead the race

When the telephone doesn't ring after midnight,
I always know it's you...

Three years and a day tomorrow, baby.

There were never problems between
Carmelita and him anymore,
they had settled in for the long run.

It was from outside, outside the circle,
it was always from the outside,
that it started.

When it ended, the bond stayed;
for him.

Sometimes he thought
it was taking a damn long time
living without her

and him.

He knew he was bad at fixing things,
so he thought he would be good at breaking things.

The only girl in the commune/family/house
that had a real job and a car
had bought a horse and she couldn't ride him.
She might of been, um, a little heavy but
it wasn't just that.
It was that no one had ever ridden this horse before.
Buck was stoned [surprise] and he said
he could break the horse but he was
just showing off for the new girl, Michelle's friend.

They drove up to the Napa valley and it was over quick.
It took one up and down shiver of the horse's butt
and he was over the head and into a new state.
The state of pain... and two cracked ribs.
After Buck and the new girl washed the dust off
in a roadside creek, they made love for the first time
and he had hiccups all the way back to the City.

Not much of an ending, but it wasn't an ending.
It was just a day that went on for a long long time...

Twenty years as a matter of faction...

So I said to Miranda,
Do you ever wonder what the next big thing is gonna be?

She said, [as usual] What do you mean?
[She says that alot]

I said, You know, like John Lennon said
nothing's gonna change my world,
but, of course, something did.
From towers sinking into themselves
against that brilliant blue background
to losing someone you love to death
or a whim of the weather or the whiskey,
every once in awhile,
you blink once
and the planets are in different places.

She said, Oh, that.

I try to stay away from
thinking about politics.

She's searching for redemption
From a past that let her down
The dreams she had so long ago
No longer come around
The ticket to salvation
Slipped just out of her reach
She thinks the ship has sailed away
She's still standing on the beach.

Winter spring summer fall
Lessons to be learned
Sure as there's a spark inside
Bridges can be burned
A touch of tenderness in the night
A place to make a stand
The times that we remember
Are the ones we never planned

Morning brings another day
Filled with hope and chance
The gypsy music in her soul
Can make the angels dance
Dreams don't die when we awake
They just go deep inside
She's due a hundred days of laughter
For evry night she cried

She's searching for redemption
From a past that let her down
The dreams she had so long ago
No longer come around
The ticket to salvation
Is just within her reach
She thinks the ship has sailed away
She's still standing on the beach.

A touch of tenderness in the night
A place to make a stand
The times that we remember
Are the ones we never planned

The times that we remember
Are the ones we never planned
