(Reposting Susan Williamson's post from the front porch)
Once upon a time, after the last Gathering, I received a call from Mamie, asking if I’d come to Houston and help her, and Jerry and Brenda find a location nearby for our 10th Gathering next summer. I figured there was plenty of time to procrastinate, and generally weasel out of it, so I put her off until September, because I had a very full August. Sure enough, Sept 2nd, she called to see when I was arriving, so I got busy researching hotels with meeting spaces. I drove down, and Jerry took us on our quest to find the perfect place. LL started out from the other direction to meet us, and I told him about a couple places he could stop and check out on the way. After several eliminations we met up with LL at what would be our first choice, even though it seemed priced out of our budget. We looked at other places, drove many miles, and did a lot of negotiating, and finally came to an affordable agreement with the hotel which was our favorite. I hope you all will like it enough to plan now to come to North Houston, next June 24-27th for our 10th anniversary year. Our agreement with the hotel is to have 250 room nights booked prior to the start of the Gathering in order to use the meeting space at a minimal charge. Actually, we need to have the minimum (250) by March 1st, 2010, or if we’re not “close” we may have to come up with a deposit. So, when we begin the process, please make your reservations ASAP, directly with hotel (I’ll post the contact info when they/we are ready…soon…maybe Monday, if it’s okay with everyone). The rooms are $79.00 + tax for up to 4 persons per room. It includes a continental breakfast and happy hour M-F in the lobby. Please go to the web site links and check it out. Most of the photos are of the ballroom. (See urls on back porch)
If I am drafted to coordinate the plans for next year, I need to be able to count on your support. If you are willing to do what you usually do, or have done before, or willing to help, please let me know. If you think you might not be able to, I’ll have Mamie call and change your mind. Lot’s more to come, after we get your input on location, and dates. See you in Houston! Susan Williamson

(Reposting everyone's replies to Susan's post )
The pictures don't do it justice. It's perfect, as is, but is going to go through a whole renovation and make over in by Jan. Everything will be brand new. When we all entered the ballroom, we agreed that it don't get much better than this. Real stage, huge room, and a kitchen in the back. I showed Suzette the hotels meeting room and she said that that was big enough. I said , You ain't seen nothing yet. There was a wedding going on in the Ball room so we couldn't go in. Only problem was that the Ballroom was $1500 a night! Susan W. got them down to $700 a night and then she negotiated a price of FREE per night if we have enough rooms filled by, I think she said, sometime in March.
For those flying into the Houston airport, that some of you used to get to the gathering in Austin and then have to travel by car to Austin, is just about 30 minutes or less down the road. The hotel provides a shuttle service, free, to and from the airport. The shuttle busses are very nice. They will also provide us, at no cost, shuttle service withing a five mile radius, I think, to places we might want to go out to.
This week I'm going to a place that my wife, Suzette, suggested and talk to them about some of you performers might be able to pick up a gig to help with expenses. Many people that we all know have played there. It's less than ten miles away and I'm going to tell the owners that many of us will be there to support them. Here's the web site: http://www.doseydoescoffeeshop.com/
About 15-20 miles away is Snooty Ville or as it's really called The Woodlands, where famous people like Dave Franklin live. Water taxi rides and more. A good place to go when there's nothing going on at the hotel. Plus we can all go to Dave's house for a steak dinner.
Here's a web site. http://www.thewoodlandscvb.com/
The Mall Is just right down I-45 and when you're finished there just get back on I-45 and drive back to the hotel which is also right off I-45.( Unless you want to spend the night with Dave )
Another feature that we might have a mini gathering, before the real one, is Mamies house. It's less than an hour away.
It's the tenth Gathering. let's try to make this the best one yet. Remember , this is the area that Mickey Grew up in. So start putting aside your money now. More later.

It's just wonderful !! Count me in ...Hey LL....Hope this means Dave will be attending this year ? can't get any closer... Virginia
I noticed that they only have 109 rooms and if it draws a big crowd I might have to rent out some of the beds in my room. Any of you lovely ladies interested. After all it appears to be X rated . Don't tell my wife, daughter, cousin or anyone else. Texasroyce
This is so funny in a peculiar sort of way...
Janet and I were with friends from Lafayette today at the Armadillo Flea Market. It is on Airtex just across Interstate 45.
This is very accessable to Intercontinental, or George Bush Airport as the call it today. IAH in airport call signs. Craig
JoeZ, This is less than a mile from the Mexican restaurant we went to a few years ago, not far from the airport. (Pappasito's).
Craig
Thanks, Craig! I'm getting hungry just thinking about Pappasito's.
Susan, I believe it's time for another round of "Know Your Newbury!" Joe Z
Excellent idea, Joe. I loved that contest!
Did you notice that Cracker Barrel is across the parking lot from the hotel.....walking distance! SusanW
Cracker Barrel??!! Count me in!
:) See you all in June.

Cracker Barrel...... You're just as sick as your granny. I hate the Cracker Barrel. A year and a half ago, at Christmas. You're mother called and said that they wanted to take us( which ended up Me, Suzette, Monica, Karley and Billy) out to eat. Your mom's treat. I had the excitement of Christmas , all over again. Just the thought of all those great places we could go out to eat and splurge!!!! Then Mamie sees a Cracker Barrell on the way to Monica's house.... and by God that's where we were going to eat! I always get indigestion when I eat there. Had to go home and drink a mixture of water and a bunch of Baking Soda. Burped for an hour.
While I'm at it I talked to Mamie today and she's been having a pain in the back of her head when she lays down and hasn't been sleeping very well for a few weeks. I'm going to take one of my 8 million dollar pillows, that came with my new bed, over and see if that helps. Suzettes mother used to have that happen to her too. My thoughts on the subject.... sleep on your stomach. Duuuhhhh.
Love as always,
LL

--------------------------------------------------------------------- I don't know if everything is set up yet to be able to reserve rooms. Susan W. might know.
Click on the web sites in her post above and check things out. I guess she or someone will let us know when we can start booking things.
I might get killed for this but there's also Dosey Does in the planning stages.

I'm afraid I'll have to object because of Jerry Newbury! I can't imagine any scenario where Jerry would not have the benefit of "Local Knowledge" on a golf course that close to his home. I also believe that if he does not have knowledge he will surely acquire it prior to our arrival. So, fellow Golfers, if it has to be, make sure you bring your checkbooks with the name Jerry Newbury already written in the "Pay To" line. Ernie
That's not the kind of talk I want to hear from my partner, councilman. Get your behind out to the driving range and let's give Jerry and Cowperson a run for their money. Jonmark
just asking if we can come ?? Sir William

Yes, Yes and OH Yes. we would love to see you! Lib
Hi Thea & Sir William! Hope to see you both around soon! sincerely erik "the Dane"
I've been saving up my golf winnings to come for gathering X but so far only have enough to get to Cave Creek so I may come with my new daddy, Ernie if he will take me golfing so he won't be the worst golfer there.
